Orphan Baseball
Looks to Continue Success
As
Centralia High School baseball coach Matt
Kottmeyer begins his ninth season at the helm,
the Orphans are looking to have another
successful campaign. With the combination of
senior leadership, along with the talent of his
players, the 2008 baseball season has the
potential to be a very good year for Orphan
baseball.
The Orphans return four pitchers who
received significant varsity playing time last
year. Coach Kottmeyer explained, “I would hope
that our pitchers do a good job of leading the
team. That would be our guys coming back, Derek
Teitsort, Aaron Newcomb, Blake Finney, Brady
Greear; all of those guys got significant time
last year and did a pretty good job so hopefully
they will be our leaders.”
Offensively, this year’s team will
be consistent from top to bottom. “From an
offensive perspective, I hope that guys like
Tyler White, Newcomb, Teitsort, and Cody
Stevenson can do a good job for us. Take a look
behind the plate. Right now we have Blake Finney
and Dustin Smith doing most of the catching. In
the outfield, besides Newcomb and Teitsort, we
have Stu Miller, Mitchell Broughton, and Ben
Zelasko. They’re all doing a pretty good job.
Broughton is hitting in the two hole for us as a
sophomore. Around the infield, Cody is the
shortstop; he has a lot of experience from last
year and gives us some speed. At third base, we
have Enzo Muschik, exchange student. He
hopefully is going to be able to put up some
good numbers for us. At second base, Jordan
Kelly in his first varsity year has gotten some
big hits in the first three games.”
The biggest weakness for the 2008
Orphans might be defensively. The team will have
to limit errors in order to have a successful
year. “That’s probably the thing we need to
improve on the most. Due to the fact that we
really haven’t hit our stride, I think some of
that is because we haven’t been able to be
outside that much, but we need to not let the
other team get more than three outs per inning.
If we do that, we’re going to be in trouble.”
Coach Kottmeyer’s goal for the year
is for his team to be competitive in the
conference. “I hope we can start off getting a
few wins and make a run for it, but we have to
start off good or we won’t have much of a
chance. Hopefully we will be playing as best as
we can once regionals come around.”
