A teen dating violence meeting was held on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010 at Kaskaskia College. There were fourteen students from Centralia High School who attended this session. The speakers included Terry Lilley and Vicki Crompton –Tetter. Students who attended from CHS were: Mariah Powe, Abigail Nelson, Tamadja Weekly, Haley Gentz, Darryl Lusch, Kelsei Drenchpohl, Brittany Atchison, Darwin Jones, Katie Thouvenin, Shaniqua Billberry, Brittany Lee, Nicole Scott, Jalissa Williams, Erin Mitchell and Mrs. Britton.
Terry Lilley presented information about identifying abusive relationships as well as how teens can deal with these situations. He had students from the audience participate in different scenarios of dating and whether they would stay or leave the situations. From the decisions the students made, he used the activity as a means of discussing situations that you sometimes find yourself in that may be uncomfortable or unsafe. It was an excellent learning experience for the audience and the participants. Vicki Crompton-Tetter shared her personal story about her own teenage daughter being murdered by her boyfriend. Her daughter, Jenny, was only 15 years old at the time. Her boyfriend stabbed her 66 times and she died in the hallway of her own home. Jenny’s boyfriend is currently serving life in prison for the crime. After many years of struggling with this tragedy, Vicki decided to forgive the boyfriend for this terrible crime. She also hoped she could help other teenagers by telling Jenny’s story. Vicki’s mission is to educate parents, teachers and teens on the signs and symptoms of dating violence. She also stated the important of teens communicating to other teens and adults when they find themselves in unsafe situations. Sometimes parents are the last to know things but friends usually know the real story.
